Roster of state volunteers, 1898-1899.

Lists volunteers in private military organizations that were formed to replace Ohio National Guard units serving in the Spanish-American War. Entries include name, age, physical description, birthplace, length of enlistment, occuapation, place of residence, marital status, date of enrollment, by whom enrolled, rank at time of discharge, date of discharge, reason for discharge, and date of discharge approval.

When Mexican and Civil War soldiers mustered out of service, many regiments turned their flags over to the state of Ohio. The General Assembly authorized the purchase of glass cases to display battle flags in the Statehouse. The battle flag collection increased as flags from the Spanish-American War, World War I and World War II were deposited. By the 1960s the flags were in poor condition.
